What is a Liver disease ?
The liver is necessary for digestion and detoxification of the body, and is also vital to the body’s metabolic and immune systems. It is the heaviest organ of the human body and hence, requires special care.
Liver disease can have multiple causes including but not limited to – hereditary (genetic), infection, lifestyle factors (obesity, alcohol overuse, exposure to toxins) and overuse of medication. If detected early, liver damage can be reversed by making lifestyle changes, however, late stage liver cancer can lead to scarring (cirrhosis), and ultimately liver disease (which can be fatal), and may require surgery or a liver transplant.
The most common types of liver disease are:
- Hepatitis: Inflammation of the liver
- Cirrhosis: Cirrhosis is scarring caused by liver disorders and other sources of liver injury, such as alcoholism, cystic fibrosis, and syphilis, though the latter two are considerably rarer.
- Liver cancer: Cancer which begins in the liver is called liver cancer. It is called secondary liver cancer when cancer begins elsewhere in the body but spreads to the liver. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most frequent kind of liver cancer.
- Liver failure: Chronic liver failure occurs when a large portion of your liver is damaged and unable to function normally, often resulting in death.
- Ascites: Ascites is the accumulation of fluid in your abdomen, which is frequently caused by severe liver disease. The additional fluid causes your stomach to expand.
- Gallstones: The gallbladder is a tiny, pear-shaped organ located directly under the liver on the right side of the abdomen. Gallstones are hardened deposits of digestive fluid in the gallbladder.
- Fatty liver disease: Fat build-up in the liver can lead to fatty liver disease. It is of two types: alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
- Autoimmune diseases: These occur when your immune system erroneously attacks healthy cells in your body.
Symptoms of liver disease vary according to the severity of the disease, and from one individual’s prognosis to another. In some cases, symptoms may not even be very apparent.
Signs to take notice of are:
- Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin)
- Pain or swelling in the abdomen
- Itching of the skin
- Leg and ankle swelling
- Dark-colored urine
- Light-colored stool
- Encephalopathy, a brain issue resulting in fatigue, perplexity or agitation, and generalised malaise
- Vomiting or nausea
- Appetite loss
- Easy bruising
